Ethanol Production : Hardly Very Green

Nick Grealy at the NHS in the UK writes a compelling argument agains the wastefulness of ethanol production. Ie, to make ethanol is harming the environment, and rushing into it may be a mistake.

Reminds me of all the hype about battery powered cars: the electricity used for the battery charging is 1) wasteful due to loss in transmission, 2) only moves the pollution production to the place where the electricity is created, rather than smoke coming frm the tailpipe.

"In principle, making fuel from plants makes good sense. Instead of spewing fossilized carbon into the atmosphere, you're burning the same carbon that a plant removed from the air only a few months earlier - so, theoretically, you've added no additional carbon. Sounds pretty green - and would be, if the plant you proposed to make the ethanol from were grown in a green way.
But corn is not."

"But just because making ethanol from corn is an environmentally and economically absurd proposition doesn't mean ethanol made from other plants is a bad idea."

I think his opinion (The Great Yellow Hope) is very telling.

Da Vinci Code

So we saw The Da Vinci Code the other night. I have to say it was not as bad as what I was expecting after hearing all the comments out of Cannes. I read the book and factually they conveyed all the pertinent parts fairly well.

My only criticism was that Tom Hanks looked so wierd and to be honest, unhealthy. I guess I mean fat!

When you think about his diet during the movie Castaway, you would have thought he would be able to control his weight better.

Or maybe it was his wacky haircut. I love the guy, but every time I seem him nowadays, I think about how he looked during Bosom Buddies and Bachelor Party.

A new disaster movie is coming out called Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America
In times like these I believe its useful to link to the gov't agencies and the sites for treatment. I am very pessimistic, as you can see.
